This means our scooters meet necessary safety and technical specifications mandated by the government, ensuring a safe and legal riding experience for our customers.

Welcome to Rhyde, the leader in sustainable micro-mobility. We professionally refurbish electric vehicles to the highest standard and make them available to you at affordable prices with a one-year guarantee for all of our vehicles. If you’ve been searching for an electric scooter on rhyde.co, you will have seen that we sell our vehicles in three aesthetic classifications.
In this post, we’ll explain what they mean. At Rhyde, we take pride in offering the highest quality electric scooters that are as reliable as new ones. All our products go through a 47-step quality control process and come with the same warranty. We offer three different aesthetic quality classifications at three different price points to make our scooters accessible to everyone.
Here is a detailed guide on the three classifications we offer:
Like New
Our Like New electric scooters look brand new and show no signs of use on the chassis. The only signs of use a vehicle in Like New condition may have is on the wheels. These signs of use are only apparent at the closest inspection - you will not notice these at a first glance.
Very Good
Our Very Good quality electric scooters are also refurbished to a very high degree and may show mild signs of use on the chassis. However, the y are just as reliable as Like New scooters. A “Very Good” scooter may have some of the following signs of use, although never more than 3 of such signs per product:
Motor: New or like new.
Chassis: Light scratches not exceeding 25mm in length, no deep scratches. A deep scratch is an imperfection that can be seen from 50cm away. No more than 2 light scratches of accepted dimensions per metal element. No dents exceeding 5mm in depth and/or 10mm in length.
Plastic components: Light scratches not exceeding 15mm in length. No cracked elements.
Wheels: Light scratches not exceed 25mm in length and no more than 2 visible per wheel. No stripped paint.
Brake components: Brake cables must be free of defects entirely. Light scratches on brake components may be seen up to 25mm in length, no more than two per component.
Handles: No signs of use visible from +50cm away.
Board: May demonstrate light discoloration. The grip tape is either re-fixed, or entirely replaced. Lights: Function perfectly. Light scratches not exceeding 10mm can be accepted.

Good
Our Good quality electric scooters are the most affordable option but still as reliable as Like New and Very Good. The difference between Very Good and Like New scooters is that they demonstrate more superficial signs of use. Here’s what you might find:
Battery: New or like new.
Motor: New or like new.
Chassis: Light scratches not exceeding 25mm in length, no deep scratches. No more than 2 light scratches of accepted dimensions per metal element. May show discoloration or denting.
Plastic components: Light scratches not exceeding 25mm in length. No cracked elements.
Wheels: Signs of use but no more than 2 visible per wheel. Deep scratches may be painted over.
Brake components: Brake cables can display light scratches or imperfections not visible from 1m. Light scratches on brake components accepted, no more than two per component.
Handles: Minimal fading may be seen, nothing visible from 1m away.
Board: May demonstrate signs of use including scratches and discoloration.
Lights: Function perfectly. Light scratches not exceeding 30mm may be seen.
The most important takeaway is that the differences between the three conditions are strictly superficial. All scooters sold by Rhyde function perfectly, and in the rare case you find that yours doesn’t, your one-year guarantee will always have your back.
We also offer a 14-day trial period with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. That’s how much we believe in our vehicles. Shop our collection today and join the eco-friendly movement!

¿QUÉ ES LA MICROMOVILIDAD REACONDICIONADA?-----
Electric scooters have become a popular mode of transportation for short distances. They are environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and convenient. When it comes to purchasing an electric scooter, you have three options: buying brand new, second-hand or refurbished. This article will walk you through all the advantages and disadvantages of buying either option.
Brand New Electric Scooters
Buying a brand new electric scooter is the most expensive option. However, it has its own benefits. Firstly, it comes with a warranty and guarantee that will cover any manufacturer defects. Secondly, a new electric scooter has the latest technology, which can mean better performance. For instance, newer models are often released with longer-lasting batteries and energy-saving features that reduce carbon emissions.
On the other hand, buying a brand new electric scooter can be expensive and may not be affordable for everyone. Furthermore, the manufacturing process of new electric scooters generates carbon emissions and waste, which can have a negative impact on the environment.
Buying a brand new scooter can have negative impacts on the environment due to the manufacturing process, which requires the extraction of raw materials, the use of energy, and the generation of waste. The production of new scooters can contribute to air and water pollution, as well as the release of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Additionally, the disposal of old or damaged scooters can also have negative impacts on the environment if they are not disposed of properly, unless they’re later refurbished. Some manufacturers are making efforts to reduce their environmental impact by using sustainable materials, minimizing waste, and using renewable energy sources in production. Ultimately, it's important to consider the environmental impact of purchasing a brand new scooter and to consider alternative options, such as buying a used or refurbished scooter, before making a decision.
Greenwashing is the practice of making exaggerated or false claims about the environmental benefits of a product or service. Some electric scooter manufacturers may engage in greenwashing by making claims about their products that are not entirely accurate. For example, a manufacturer may claim that their electric scooters are environmentally friendly because they emit no emissions, but fail to mention that the electricity used to charge the scooter may come from non-renewable sources. Additionally, a manufacturer may claim that their electric scooters are made from recycled materials, but fail to disclose that only a small percentage of the materials used in the product are actually recycled. It's important for consumers to be aware of these claims and to do their own research to determine the true environmental impact of a product. By doing so, consumers can make more informed decisions and choose products that align with their values and environmental goals.
Second-Hand Electric Scooters
A second-hand item is one that is bought directly from another individual, either in person or through a third-party marketplace. Buying a second-hand electric scooter tends to be the cheapest option. It is ideal for those who are on a tight budget. Additionally, since it is already used, there is no need to worry about the initial depreciation. Moreover, it is a good option for those who are not planning to use it for a long period of time.
In terms of the environment, buying a second-hand electric scooter has a positive impact by reducing the demand for new products. By purchasing a second-hand scooter, one can help reduce the amount of waste generated from the manufacturing and disposal of new scooters and all negative externalities mentioned above.
There are several risks associated with buying a second-hand electric scooter, especially from unknown sources. One of the biggest risks is the possibility of purchasing a scooter that has undisclosed mechanical or electrical problems that may not even be apparent in your first few rides. Additionally, if the scooter has been poorly maintained or has been in an accident, it could be unsafe to ride. Another risk is the possibility of purchasing a stolen scooter, which could result in legal issues for the buyer. When buying a second-hand electric scooter, it's important to thoroughly inspect the scooter, ask questions about its history and maintenance, and purchase from a reputable source, which is generally undeterminable.
One large issue we must consider is payment, as many second-hand scooters are paid for in cash. Paying by credit card to a reputable electric scooter dealer (retail or refurbished) offers several benefits compared to paying someone unknown in cash. First, paying by credit card provides a record of the transaction, which can be useful in case of a dispute or if the scooter is defective. If the scooter is not as described or is damaged, the buyer can dispute the charge with the credit card company and potentially receive a refund. Additionally, paying by credit card offers protection against fraud, as credit card companies have measures in place to detect and prevent fraudulent transactions. On the other hand, paying an unknown seller in cash offers no protection against fraud or disputes, and it can be difficult to recover lost funds if the seller turns out to be fraudulent.
Refurbished Electric Scooters
In terms of the environment, buying a refurbished electric scooter has positive impacts similar to buying a second-hand scooter. Refurbishing a used scooter reduces the demand for new products, thus minimizing the negative impact of manufacturing new scooters. Moreover, the refurbishing process can also reduce waste and carbon emissions by reusing and recycling parts. Buying a refurbished electric scooter is a balance between buying a brand new and a second-hand scooter. Refurbished products come with a warranty and guarantee that covers any defects. Rhyde offers a one year warranty on all of our products fro customer peace of mind. Additionally, it is less risky than buying a second-hand scooter, as the faults have already been identified and repaired. We subject all of our vehicles to a 47-step quality-testing process to ensure safety. Refurbished electric scooters often have newer parts, such as batteries and motors, which means they can be just as efficient and environmentally friendly as brand new models.
Refurbished electric scooters also carry the same price benefit of second-hand scooters, giving you the opportunity to purchase high quality vehicles at significantly lower prices. Rhyde even partners with Klarna to allow you pay in instalments, no matter what bank you use. All of our payments are conducted securely through (find name of credit card security element) guaranteeing you peace of mind, and we allow a 14 day trial period, during which you can return your scooter if, for whatever reason, you decide not to keep it. Rhyde takes transparency a step further, allowing you to schedule a video conference to see the actual product you intend to buy.
Summary
Whether to buy a brand new, second-hand, or refurbished electric scooter depends on several factors, including personal preference, budget, and environmental considerations. Brand new electric scooters are more efficient and environmentally friendly but are the most expensive option. Second-hand electric scooters are affordable and reduce the demand for new products, but may not have a warranty and pose potential safety risks. Refurbished electric scooters are a balance between buying new and second-hand scooters, and can be just as efficient and environmentally friendly as brand new models, and therefore wins our favor. At Rhyde we promise our customer the most affordable and safe experience - or their money back, guaranteed.

BRAND NEW, SECOND HAND, RECONDITIONED - WHICH WAY TO GO?-----

Prestaciones adicionales (luces, panel, etc)

¿Tus itinerarios habituales tienen muchas cuestas?
Last Christmas, we introduced to our one of favorite scooters available on rhyde, the Bongo Serie A Connected. We call it the price-quality king, amazing specs at a price that's hard to ignore. Spoiler alert, you loved it. They're one of our best-selling scooters to date. If you’d like to read our review on it, continue your reading here.
The Bongo Serie A Connected Advanced (let's just call it the Advanced, from here on out) is everything that we love about its little brother, but with just a bit more muscle. Sound good to you? Us too. Let's run you through the features.
1. Connect
Connect via Bluetooth from your smartphone and download the free app to connect with to the Advanced, it’ll give you access to vehicle information and the ability to make different adjustments to personalize your ride.
2. Climb
Hills? What hills? With a beefy maximum power output of 700W, it is capable of climbing steep slopes unlike any other scooter in it's price range. It also has a nominal power of 350W.
3. Range Plus, Plus
The Bongo Series A Connected packs a respectable 25km range. The Advanced? An extra 10km! This Bongo also shares the same intuitive swappable battery system as its little brother, so 35km can easily be 70km with a quick swap. Soon you'll be going cross-country.
4. Choose
You have three driving modes that you can choose especially at the beginning to adapt to driving the Advanced.
Eco mode; it's a smooth ride, where the battery lasts longer.
Comfort mode; with a medium and constant speed, so you can save battery but at a higher speed
Sport mode; with maximum power reaching maximum speed
If you want to optimize the battery of your electric scooter to the maximum, choose the Cruising Speed, so you can advance as much as possible with the same battery.
5. Speed
The Advanced also will take you 25km/h to wherever you need to go. You’re going to want a helmet, we can help with that too.
6. Safety
You will be informed at all times thanks to its on-board computer, with an LED screen that informs you of the speed and range you have left, as well as if there is a possible failure in the engine. Also, thanks to its Wi-Fi connection, you will also be able to find out through the app. Take care of your safety, it has a triple braking system, so that driving safety increases, with disc brake, electric and the rear manual. It is safe to go out at night, thanks to its LED lights, both front and rear and the brake light. It also has a bell to communicate if necessary, both with pedestrians and with other drivers.
7. Easy
For greater comfort, the Advanced is completely foldable and also with a very fast and simple mechanism. When we say completely foldable, it is because even the grips of the scooter fold to reduce surface area as much as possible.
So everything we loved about the Connected, with more range.
Did we mention it comes with slick red accents?
Very difficult to resist, and priced only at €329, freshly refurbished - we wouldn’t wait too long before they sell out.
So, you’ve bought an electric scooter. No, even better, you’ve bought a rhyde electric scooter (right?). You’re zipping around town getting where you’ve got to get, how you’d like to get there and you’re high-fiving yourself for basically spearheading an environmental movement on two wheels. Though we base ourselves on a circular business model actively looking to close the loop, it’s not our products that we want coming back to us. So, today, let’s look at how to make your scooters last longer. Like a bad tattoo, prevention will always be preferable to correction. Preventing harm from occurring to your scooter will keep you safer on the streets, maintain your riding experience and will even save you money. Though you’ll find many in-depth electric scooter home-maintenance tutorials online, we’ll make it easier for you with our two-step guide.
It’s called Clean it and Charge it. Try follow along.
Clean it.
First thing’s first: cleanliness. We know, this is not the year you want to read another article demanding better hygiene but a clean scooter, is a happy scooter. Regularly wiping down your scooter between rides with warm soapy water and a sponge will keep your scooter free from grime and other elements that can wear down the materials used over time. A bit of moisture on your sponge or cleaning cloth will help you remove the debris easier, but remember never to hose your electric scooter down, no matter how durable it is. Make sure your scooter is switched off and unplugged when you’re cleaning it and dry it thoroughly when you’re done.
Semi-regularly, clean the tires of your electric scooter with warm soapy water, as well. This will also give you the opportunity to check your rims and tires for any damage that may require replacement. Keep a look out for punctures or cuts as they may burst during a ride if not previously resolved. Remember to check your tire pressure. Lower pressure can decrease speed and increase danger of damaging your rims, you’re also at risk of using more battery power to compensate for the lack of tire pressure. Higher pressures run the risk of bursting while you ride and can directly impact the ride quality and cornering safety. Here’s a general rule to use: if you’re a heavier rider, you’re looking for pressure in between 42-43 psi, if you’re a lighter rider, 36-37 psi’ll do the trick. A quick trip to a tire-shop can easily sort you out, but if you’ve got a pump at home, here’s a link to a video demonstrating how to take care of it yourself.
Charge it.
The steps above will help you take care of the external elements of your scooter, but what about the battery? You’ll be happy to know the chances of you having to repair the actual battery of your scooter are actually quite low. In fact, all scooters sold by Rhyde ship with batteries with the highest capacity and are checked to ensure structural integrity. We got you. But even then, here are some rules you should follow to make sure you’re getting the best out of the one in yours.
Do not fully deplete your scooter. An electric scooter typically ships with a battery with anywhere between 500-1000 charge cycles, depending on the model. A full cycle starts at 100%, drops to 0% and then goes back up to 100. By charging your scooter regularly before it drops to 0%, you’re preserving the full charge capability of your scooter.
Use the correct charger. All chargers that ship with our scooters are specifically engineered to maintain the level of current being delivered to the scooter and its battery. Over or undercharging can risk the life of battery.
Don’t leave your scooter outside. It’ll get lonely. No, but seriously, your electric scooter generally needs to be someplace temperature regulated when its not in use because exposure to extreme temperatures will degrade the cells in your battery faster, causing fluctuations in its power stability.
Enjoy it! If you follow these steps (and promise not to ride in the rain) we’re happy to anoint you a junior rhyde maintenance specialist.
Congratulations! We’re proud of you and we’re always here for you, so never hesitate to send us a message if you’ve got further questions. rhyde safe!
Spoiler alert, the answer is yes.
Helmets have been an ongoing discussion in the micro-mobility world with particular regard to the electric scooter. This makes sense, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in sales of privately-owned electric scooters (have you gotten yours, yet?) over the past year and the question of safety should be one not only on your mind, but those of your respective governing bodies as well.
Given that scooters can accelerate up to 25km/h, falling off one may not be as fun as riding one in the first place.
Helmets mandates, however, vary from place to place. The EU hasn’t harmonized legislation for it just yet, and in many countries there is no helmet law, or the enforcement of helmet laws are at the behest of local governments.
For example, in Rhyde’s home of beautiful sunny España, legislation was just recently introduced obliging all riders to wear helmets, at risk of a penalty, when this was a regional law before.
It reads: "The driver and occupants of motor vehicles and mopeds are obliged to use seat belts, helmets and other protective elements in the terms to be determined by regulation. The driver of a personal mobility vehicle shall be obliged to wear a protective helmet under the terms determined by regulation."
Countries like France and Sweden have declared helmets to be necessary but the law only apples to riders under a specific age. In countries like South Korea and Japan, the electric scooter is classed as motorcycle, meaning they fall under their respective Road Traffic Acts, and all rider are required to wear helmets. For maximum clarity, you can consult the local laws in your area but if you ask us, you should wear one anyway. It’s easier as we’re sure no policeman would pull you over for committing the crime of wearing a helmet. Apart from being statements of both fashion and your dedication to road safety, they protect, well, your head. And we think that’s pretty cool.
Besides acting as a model board to fit your lovely facial features and occasionally as an illegal weapon for underground MMA fights, your head houses something generally very difficult to fix and near-impossible to replace - your brain.
Here’s a link to a webMD slideshow that’ll give you a more in-depth look at head injuries but to put things simply, your brain lives in your skull and is cushioned by membrane and fluids for extra padding.
The reason it’s got Jay-Z level security is that it doesn’t like to be shaken, nor stirred. If something causes it impact, you risk bruising, broken blood vessels or nerve damage. And while you may be tempted to write off the possible severity of a webMD article (you’ve got foot fungus and therefore have 2 days to live) we assure you, a head injury is nothing to shrug off - it can kill you. In a study of 6,000 bike-related injuries, riders had a 52% lower risk of brain injury and 44% lower risk of death when wearing a helmet. There is no reason not to wear one.
Electric scooters are replaceable, but you’re one of a kind. At this moment in time, rhyde is not able to refurbish human beings, no matter how good your warranty coverage is. Do us a favor, wear a helmet when you ride. And if your wondering where to look for one, click here and we’ll help you out.
We’re in the mood for a bit of fun today in the rhyde office, so today we’ll be comparing electric scooters to petrol cars.
Price
Let’s start at the beginning: getting one in the first place. Brand new electric scooters will run you anywhere between EUR350 for a basic example to EUR1000+ for a high-end model. The average price of a brand new car is about EUR34.000, and for not the most exciting car either.
We’re known for our strong attention to detail at rhyde, so we wouldn’t blame you for not noticing the minor difference between these price ranges. This is where you have ask yourself what the purpose of you owning a car is.
Are you in need of regularly making long commutes with passenger seats?
If so, we understand - more power to you. But if you intend to cram yourself into a two seater every morning to drive 5km to a parking lot not even close to where the office is, you might want to give that a second thought.
Fuel
Like owning a pet, if you don’t feed your mode of transportation, its not going to be as fun to have around.
We don’t have to tell you a car is more fuel inefficient than an electric scooter. Just look at the two. One weighs 2000 kilos and the other you could do kettlebell swings with for reps (rhyde Sustainable Kettlebells coming soon). The bulk of the energy required by either mode of transport will be used to generate movement. Considering the car weighs 24x more than the average person and the scooter weighs 5x less, a car will use the majority to move itself, and the electric scooter will use its energy to move you. If we consider powering a petrol car with equivalent of 1 kilowatt-hour of energy, and a scooter the same, the scooter would technically travel 133km. A car? 0.8km. That makes the electric scooter well over 100x more efficient than a car is. Is it worth you pumping all that gas?
Maintenance
Healthy relationships involve having to put a bit of work in. Healthy vehicles are not much different.
You’re going to want to keep your electric scooter clean. Keep debris out of the crevices and tires, make sure your bearings are well-lubricated and grease it yourself every 6 months or so. The amount of work is negligible as there are fewer moving parts.
Cars, in contrast, are a cacophony of moving parts and when one of them go wrong, even trained professionals have a hard time figuring out which it is before they can repair or replace them. Speaking of trained professionals, if you’re not one yourself, you’re going to have to hire one - and they cost more than tap water and a can of WD-40.
While you can have an electric scooter insured, it’s not obligatory. You’re going to have to insure your car by law. All of this, in Europe, adds up to an average cost of EUR344 a month. At that rate, you could buy a new electric scooter every month (don’t do this, you’d be defeating the purposet). An electric scooter, on the other hand, won’t cost you anything.
Manufacturing Emissions
We’ve broken down the emissions from producing electric scooters in a previous post, but our estimate provides that it is around 178.08kg of carbon equivalent per scooter. That’s nothing to scoff at, it takes 9 fully grown trees a year to offset that amount of carbon.
But the average family car? 7000kg of carbon equivalent. If a fully grown tree offsets 21kg a year, that’s 334 trees a car needs. Fun fact, manufacturing electric cars emits an average of 8000kg of carbon equivalent, though over the course of its life it will offset this with it’s lower carbon footprint.
We could do with better air, and we could do more trees. Fewer cars on the street, doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Zip around town, cutting through traffic, minimizing the negative effects of breathing in car fumes for extended periods of time, while adding nothing to the atmosphere yourself.
We’re not purposely talking down cars, but when‘s the last time you heard of someone folding up their Corolla and carrying it up to their apartment? At rhyde, we pride ourselves on selling the most sustainable micro-mobility solution. One that reaps all the benefits of an electric scooter in the city, but offsets the carbon emitted by the mass-manufactured scooter industry - all the while being more affordable.
We’re your one-stop shop to buy, sell and learn more about sustainable electric scooters, and we’re officially open for business. About rhyde
At rhyde, we’re all about vitalizing. What does that mean? Let us explain.
It’s all about reinvigorating. It’s all about moving forward. And more importantly, it’s all about making things better.
Basically, it’s an ideology that we follow and impress upon our customers as well. We apply it to our products, the way we do business, and our very lives themselves.
Here’s the pitch. The scooters we sell are reconditioned to the highest level. We ensure this through a process that begins long before you click ‘Buy Now’ - through a network of sellers and buyers (such as yourselves), a strong team of knowledgeable and skilled repair experts, and an ironclad quality assurance procedure. Our products are more affordable, finished to a brand-new state and ship with satisfaction guarantees.
So, rhyde vitalizes scooters. Shop our collection today. But why sell a premium refurbished scooter? Sounds like a lot of work, right? You’re right, it is. But it’s worth it.
If you’re new to rhyde, you probably haven’t heard about #9trees. Using studies conducted by North Carolina State University, we’ve been able to calculate that mass manufacturing one Xiaomi M365 emits 178.08kg of carbon equivalent into the atmosphere, whereas a fully grown tree can only offset 21kg every year. This means it takes 9 fully grown trees to offset the carbon demanded by one scooter. When you buy from us instead, we offset these emissions.
Rhyde believes in the circular economy. We’re all about closing the loop, paving the way for more jobs, higher affordability and offsetting.
Let’s follow along this chain, how would a vitalized scooter vitalize you?
Our products are high-quality, lightweight, easy to store, and affordable. They’re also environmentally-friendly and physical representations of the road towards carbon neutrality. Did we mention they move? Very well, in fact. And they’re fun. They’re so much fun.
Hitting the gym today? Ditch the metro and hop on a rhyde, even better after leg-day.
Early lecture tomorrow? Wake up rested without having to worry about rushing to public transport.

The possibilities are endless! Now that you’ve read about #vitalized, begin your journey by shopping through our collection. Make sure you’re following us on social media and drop us a DM telling us how you vitalized your life, someone else’s, or your business. We’ll feature you for it too!
At rhyde, our business model is circular. Sounds catchy, but what does that actually mean? Let us explain.
Let’s start at the beginning. Traditional production processes follow what is known as a linear model, or the linear economy. This is “take, make, use, and dispose”. You take resources and raw materials, make something out of them, use the product for a finite period of time, and dispose of it when it reaches the end of its lifecycle - or when it’s been taking up too much space in your apartment.
The Earth takes almost 1.5 years to regenerate what we use in a year. Yet, just about 5% of the remaining value of material goods is recaptured and used when we dispose of the products. You see where the problem is, right?
A circular model, in contrast, encourages reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling to create a closed-loop system, minimizing the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. By using things for longer, we also improve the productivity of resources involved in its manufacturing.
In short, we take less, and dispose of less - and it makes things cheaper and more eco-friendly for everyone. What’s not to love?
You might have even participated in the circular economy without even realizing it. Have you ever rented a tuxedo? Shopped at a vintage store? Or bought a refurbished good (maybe a sustainably-vitalized Xiaomi 1S)? These, among others, are products of a circular model and you earn a gold star from us for supporting circular institutions.
The linear economy promotes extraction and consumption. It can even be argued that one of the most tragic innovations of the mass-production industry has been the ability to produce things that weren’t meant to last in the first place. You’ve no doubt heard an older relative complain about how “they don’t make em like this anymore”, pointing to a 50-year-old record player as you clutch your hand tighter to hide the cracked screen of the fourth phone you’ve bought this year.
Beyond this, the circular economy aligns with many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 7 on energy, 8 on economic growth, 11 on sustainable cities, 12 on responsible consumption and production, 13 on climate change, 14 on oceans, and 15 on life on land. On the EU level the circular economy action plan is a featured element of the European Green Deal to become the world’s first climate neutral bloc by 2050.
Achieving carbon neutrality at such a scale in today’s age is ambitious, but the circular model’s role in the transition to such a goal may be more significant than one would think. Currently, our world economy is 9.1% circular - demonstrating a very large circularity gap and an opportunity to increase this value. This number is significantly increased by closing loops on a linear model, through methods such as recycling, waste valorization, or increasing the useable lifecycle of the product in question.
Determining the end of a product’s lifecycle is also an exercise in subjectivity. Is it when it won’t turn on? When it breaks? When a new model comes out? The lives of consumer goods aren’t organic in the way that when one is over, it’s necessarily over over. Repairs and maintenance services have been around since well before the industrial revolution, keeping products alive for as long as possible and the circular economy has further emphasized its importance to not only the current owner of a product, but the next one of the same - and the one after that. That’s not disposal, it’s just reallocation. And at rhyde, we can get behind that.
We work hard to make available to you professionally refurbished scooters that drive as good, or even better, than the day they came out of the factory - making your commute not only zero emission, but also a big step towards carbon neutrality in the industry through our circular approach.
Electric vehicles are an eco-friendly means of transport, from Nissan Leafs to Segway Rollerblades. Somewhere in the middle, we have the humble electric scooter. Made popular by their convenience and ease of use, these road-ready stalks of fun have been taking the world of personal transportation by storm - all the while reducing the carbon footprints of the customers that choose them over non-electric alternatives.
Or do they?
While you may first awaken your scooter after you pull it out of the box, it’s life begins long before you strap on your helmet and press on the accelerator. Mass-manufacturing processes have historically impacted the environment negatively, and unfortunately the electric scooter is no outlier. Today, we will take a look into the real carbon impact of every electric scooter you see populating your city’s sidewalks.
We’ll consider two of the basic elements that make up a scooter: the chassis itself, and the battery that powers it. If you’d like to learn more about the individual parts of the scooter and their respective environmental impacts, we go into more detail in another one of our articles!
I. Chassis
Aluminium and other aluminium-based alloys are well-known for being strong and lightweight. This is why your scooter is able to support your weight from point A to point B, and be light enough for you to fold up and carry to point C. It’s affordable, too, making scooters the most accessible motorized vehicle available to date.
It has a range of strengths, but its literal strength is also its weakness. Industrial-grade aluminium is difficult to mold, requiring high amounts of heat to shape into scooter frames. This, multiplied by mass-manufacturing quantities, aggregates to high carbon emissions before a scooter even leaves the factory.
II. Batteries
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are just that - rechargeable. These batteries power scooters, offering robust ranges at smile-conjuring speeds. When they run out, plug the scooter into a wall for just a few hours, and they’ll carry you out on yet another adventure. At rhyde, we’re fans of things you can use over and over again.
Down-side? When improperly disposed of, the casings erode and they leach harmful chemicals into the ground. Down-er side? They’re not as easy to recycle as the boxes they come in. The highly-reactive chemicals used to construct them are fire hazards and have been known to burst into flames, with the possibility of causing serious injury. The batteries can be recycled by qualified electronic recycling companies. Click here to learn more about them.
Keeping this in mind, industry practices have changed to allow for longer lifespans of lithium-ion batteries, and the ones in your scooter are no expectation. But why bring them up in the first place?
Life Cycle
A good battery is only as good as the thing you put it in. Consumer scooters can last long if they’re taken care of and it may be years till one would need a battery replaced. However, when they’re disposed of, even with a functional battery, they risk the harmful effects to the environment described above.
Ride-sharing scooters have also filled pavements around the world, and while their use poses minimal risk of carbon emissions, they degrade much faster than your Xiaomi 1S will.
Ultimately, the key to offsetting the harm a scooter has caused (and may cause in the future) is to keep it out of landfills and, instead, on the road. The longer the life-time of each individual scooter, the lower the CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer become. This is where we come in. rhyde
At rhyde, we love scooters. We really love them. We love them so much, we’re working to keep every scooter bought from a manufacturer on the streets as long as possible. Click here to learn more about rhyde and why we call ourselves the most sustainable micro-mobility company out there.

We know electric scooters are an eco-friendly mode of transportation, but the mass-manufacturing process may not be as much. Based off a study by North Carolina State University, here’s a breakdown of all the elements that make up the manufacturing process of a Xiaomi M365 and their Global Warming Potential (read “carbon emissions”).
They might surprise you.
Aluminum
The aluminum frame of your scooter keeps everything together, making your model easy to carry while ensuring its structurally sound. Global Warming Potential: 78.8kg of carbon equivalent (CO2eq)
Battery
Yes, the thing that powers your scooter.
Global Warming Potential: 45.0kg of carbon equivalent
Battery Recycled Content

Other
All the little bits you might forget about, they still add up.
Global Warming Potential: 6.4kg of carbon equivalent
Total: 178.08kg of carbon equivalent
To put that into context, a fully-grown tree offsets about 21kg of carbon dioxide a year. Offsetting the carbon put into the atmosphere by one scooter would require 9 TREES to filter.
Through rhyde, you can offset that by buying a scooter that has been sustainably refurbished.
And as an added bonus, for every scooter bought, we’ll plant one additional tree ourselves.
